Last week President Obama announced he would be lifting the ban on travelers into the United States infected with HIV. This ban, instated 22 years ago, was one based in the fear of the unknown that surrounded the disease at the time. Although Obama signed the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act just a few days ago, it will take about 2 to 3 months for the travel exclusion to be completely lifted. Once lifted, however, those who had been previously barred from travel to the U.S. because of their infection will be able to come and go like everyone else.
