This is not your usual puzzle game. A fusion of two classic puzzle games ever to grace the world of video games, the Puyo Puyo Tetris, will be released for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 on April 25, 2017, in North America. On April 28, 2017, it will then be available in Europe.
Sonic Team developed this mash-up video game under Sega. The game was first released in February 2014 for Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation 3 but only in Japan. Tetris and Puyo Puyo are both classics in the sense that the individual games were first released before the turn of the millennium, in 1984 and 1991 respectively.
The gameplay for Puyo Puyo Tetris is also a fusion of game mechanics from Tetris, Puyo Puyo, and other puzzle games. Tetriminos from Tetris and the blob pieces of Puyo Puyo comes together on a game board. Sega has also released the modes breakdown of the video game.
The story of the game is based on Puyo Puyo’s story line. The Puyo Puyo protagonist characters, Amitie, Arle, and Carbuncle, fell into the realm of Ringo where Tetriminos from the game of Tetris fell from the sky. This story line marks the crossover between Puyo Puyo and Tetris.
The single player type is the Adventure mode which is portioned into ten acts that have ten stages each. This mode features characters from Puyo Puyo and Tetris.
For the Multiplayer mode, up to four players can participate. There are several game variants to choose from. In the Versus mode, players go against head to head with the game of Puyo Puyo or Tetris. Swap is where players compete against each other with the game of both Puyo Puyo and Tetris switching back and forth. In the Fusion mode, as the name implies, this game combines Tetris and Puyo Puyo puzzle pieces in one game.
The Big Bang mode is a race by clearing challenge games as fast as the players can. Finally, Party mode players can play between Puyo Puyo or Tetris game. But the fun part is that the players can acquire special puzzle pieces to activate characters or items that can cause harm to their opponent.
Puyo Puyo Tetris also has an online game mode where players can compete against each other in different parts of the globe. Up to four players can compete in this mode. They can choose between Puzzle League and Free Play. It also has a Solo Arcade mode where players can do the Multiplayer game against their console’s CPU. There are three sub-modes for this which are Battle, Endurance, and Challenge.
For Nintendo Switch, Puyo Puyo Tetris will be available digitally for $29.99 and physically on the Switch game card for $39.99. There will be a physical release for PlayStation 4 users available on disc for $39.99. The mash-up of these two classic puzzle video games is an exciting twist that will surely get gamers hooked.
